Chicks and rabbits..

The pet store I buy my feeder mice at doesnt' sell any rats other than adults ( my baby can't eat them) and they don't even bring in any frozen rats. The 2 things I wanted to do with my bp soon is get him on frozen rats, but with this pet store(the only one I trust) I can't. Also because I'm only 16 I can't get any over the internet. The pet store I go to does sell frozen baby rabbits and chicks. I was wondering if these were good to feed to my bp? Also if they are good, can they be used as the main food or just a 'treat' every once in a while?

Thanks

Wish I could find a local place that sells frozen rabbits.

JMHO, FWIW, YMMV.

I'll take it from the last post that rabbits are a good food. But any more info would be great.

Sorry, I just feed one rabbit pinky to one baby ball python once. The python seemed to like it even though it was a large meal but of course once isn’t enough to know the long term effects. I guess as long as the price and supply look good why not give it a try and let us know in a couple of years how it went.

I’d worry a little more about the health of the chicks but again I don’t have enough data to support them being worse or more of a risk. I used to feed a Burmese python colony and a few boas almost exclusively on chickens and they seemed to do fine. Contrary to what I had always heard about fowl making foul feces I found that the extra fiber of the feathers seemed to result in dry and crumbly piles that could be shoveled with ease (glad I now own ball pythons that don’t require farm tools to clean up after).

From what I understand, it's best not to switch around food with ball pythons because they're typically picky eaters to begin with. If you're introducing new foods, you're taking the risk that they'll love that food and eat nothing else...feeding a snake chicks or baby rabbits it's whole life could get extremely pricey. (Not to mention it being hard to find them later if you move...) Rabbits ARE good food, but I'd leave them to the larger snakes...try to keep your bp on rats.

Check and see if there are going to be any herp shows/expos in your area. They are a great place to get a supply of frozen feeders in just about any size you would need.

If that won't work...maybe your parents could order the frozen rats off the Internet for you and you could pay them back? Just a thought....
