Aberrant ruthveni

Burnsy Aug 19, 2013 12:53 PM

Hi,

seems to be a year of holdbacks. Got a few aberrant ruthveni this year including this two patternless animals. I don't know if they are similar with the US line or not. But for sure it is genetic.

I only ever had Amealco ruthveni but I did produce some that had bright red and clean white as babies/yearlings but I didn't keep them to adulthood.

These that Gerritt have may lighten up....Just like most hatchling snakes alot of the color fades with age....But Tapalpas stay bright red into adulthood.....Much like triangulum. No wonder they confused everyone when they were found.....lol

I actually didn't know about the Tapalpa's staying red until you just mentioned it. That does explain something I've wondered about for a long time. Many years ago Robert Applegate spoke of two forms of ruthveni, a larger, darker form and a smaller, brighter form. Without knowing it he must have been speaking of Amealco vs. Tapalpa but he never mentioned they were two different localities. Now it's clear.
