Hatchling pics...

Dave7777 Sep 03, 2013 05:14 PM

These are my first successful hatchlings. They are from a pastel x 25% het pied female and they are 3 days old in these pictures.

The colors and patterns are nice, and I hope they hold out through the first few sheds. Judging from the blushing, they all look like they might be pastels... Also, two have skinny tails and may be females while the third is probably a male (fat tail).

They haven't eaten yet and haven't shed... Should I wait for the shed first before feeding?

Let me know what you guys think.

Dave.

Congradulations!

After first shed you start feeding.

Congratulations! Yes, I generally wait until after the first shed before offering food.

The Pastels look great, not really sure what a 25% Het Pied is. If it is a female from a Het Pied bred to a normal, I can see it being listed as 25%, but in reality, probably should be listed as like 90% probable normal. Especially if the Het Pied, assuming that was the breeding, is unproven. So, are the babies now 12.5% Possible Het Pieds...?

100% het pied bred to normal = 50% het pied. THat's what the female was who laid the eggs...

So, female 50% het pied bred to pastel = 25% possible het babies... Slim odds, I know. And, seeing as how I'll probably never be able to afford a pied male, pointless in all reality.

Still, I like to keep track of the genetics just in case.

And thanks for the compliments on the colors. The three have shed as of today, and the colors are holding strong. Looks like I lucked out on the odds this year, especially with two probable females. In a few years, I could be producing super pastels, which would be awesome.

I'll try feeding tomorrow or Wednesday, and I'll let you guys know how it goes...

Dave.

Pied male would be the best way to prove out any possible het Pieds, but a Pastel Het Pied would not be a bad second choice if money is a barrier to getting a visual Pied. In the industry, possible het is used for 50 and 66% possible hets, nothing less.
