F2 Green Valley, Arizona getula

The original wild caught sire was a nigrita looking phenotype and the dam was a splendida phenotype. Terry Cox found them within yards from each other. Terry produced the F1 clutch and I was able to get a pair. Both were splendida phenotypes but one was a little darker than normal. Some of the siblings to the pair of F1s I got had Californiae influence. I bred the F1 pair this year to see what the 2nd filial generation from the wild would produce. I was really hoping to produce some nigrita phenotypes but that did not happen. Out of the 7 huge eggs this is what hatched.......All splendida like phenotypes with some californiae influence....

My favorite out of the clutch....

That's very neat with having the influence of different phenotypes. I would not be too suprized if some of them become more nigrita-like with age. Nor would I be suprized if the clutches end up showing some variability from year to year.

Also this is a good example of what I would call a true intergrade project.

I, too think some will darken up a bit and look similar to the sure with age.
I am going to breed the F1s again next year to see if there's any variation

I believe nigrita to be a darker clinal variation of splendida. Much like the darker californiae found to the south.....

I have proved that the melanistic trait was not recessive from the original WC nigrita phenotype.

Are all the hypermel caliking genes recessive?

I'm not sure.
