dgarner Sep 09, 2013 11:35 PM

I finally borrowed a camera and got a better pic of my kingsnake. Anyone have an idea on the ID? Thanks!

Since everyone on the East coast is probably sleeping, I'll say it looks like a meansi to me. I don't recall seeing one that faded, so I could be wrong. Its a cool looking king.

It looks like an Apalachicola King, aka Blotched King, aka Goin's King. The scientific name was originally Lampropeltis getula "goini" but as Ross said they are now refered to as L. g. meansi by some. Having the old name too might help if you wanna do some research.

It could also be a cross of some sort but it looks very "goini" to me.

I say Goini.
Meansi are actually found in a concentrated location surrounded by goini on three sides and the gulf of Mexico on one side.

Well, accordign to Hubbs book.....lol

John, according to Hubbs book, isn't this a meansi? Goini don't fade out like that in the darker blotches from what I remember Hubbs telling me.

I am sure you are correct.....I just call them all L. g. goini. Krysko tried to resurrect L. g. meansi. But it is just like anything else in the scientific world. Research and "papers" have to be accepted by everyone to become the correct information. For example: I am never calling L.g.nigrita L. californiae......or pryos just south of the Mongollon Rim knoblochi..........hahahaha

But I have accepted the speciation of mexicana.
L. greeri
L. mexicana
L. leonis
L. alterna and L. ruthveni to complete the complex.

Okay, thank you all very much. That's what I was thinking but I don't know much about kings so wanted to check. I appreciate it.
