bunch of baby snakes sunning on a road in Michigan -- what are they?

pavel Oct 07, 2003 08:09 PM

Hi all,
Today, while out for a walk, I came upon 5 or six baby snakes. One had been run over-- by car I'd guess. Curious as to what they were.

description of the terrain:
Marshall/Battle Creek, MI
The road was a dead end / no outlet that runs between two fields. On field appeared to be for hay, the other was a fenced off lot that appeared to be going 'back to nature'. There was a small creek down at the end of the road. Only two or 3 homes on this road so it isn't a high traffic area.

Description of the snakes in question:

LENGTH: Most were approx 6 inches long, 2 were more like 4 inches

WIDETH: most about the thickness of a pencil, the 2 tinier ones about 1/2 that

EYES: round pupils

COLORATION:
--upper body: light brown with some irridescence noticible on the sides; 4 stripes running the length of the body -- 1 faint darker brown [maybe verging on black] stripe on either side of the body, the other two stripes running along either side of the spine
--head: darker brown than the upper body
--belly: orange like the Cleveland Browns football team orange
***NOTE the really tiny ones had a darker brown body and a pale brown patch/dot at the back of the skull [but same orange belly]

NOTED OBSERVATION:I believe they were constrictors in habit judging by the way they wrapped around my fingers [reminded me of how my pueblan milksnake can grip -- definitely a stronger and more complete grip than my garter snake can do], even the tail tips were able to "grasp" my fingers

Any ideas?

Pavel
