My opinion.....

gecko_den Oct 07, 2003 08:13 PM

While you are all certainly welcome to voice your opinions, I believe that you are jumping to some conclusions. To suggest that because we don't set up the geckos in elaborate natural settings that the quality of care they receive is substandard is an absurd statement.
And, if I choose to work with the more expensive morphs, and sell them to make a bit of money on the side, while still getting enjoyment from the hobby, that really is my choice. You can choose to not buy the more expensive morphs, that is your choice. However, unsolicited opinions from someone not old enough to drive, doesn't pay rent, and really has a limited view of what is beyond their tidy, little sheltered world, sorry your opinion doesn't hold much water to me. And that is my opinion, harsh as it may sound, which I guess I'm as much entitled to give here as you are yours.......

This is a public forum, not just intented for adults. Sure, i may not pay rent, drive cars, etc, but does that interfere with my interest and hobby in herpetology? This is a place of discussion, not a place to judge someone, and not care about theyre opinions because theyre young....if thats what your doing, than i strongly disagree with you...

I agree nasr, your opinions were well stated (although a quick re-read for spelling & sentence structure before posting would be nice). You were very respectful in the way you brought your questions to the forum & didn't deserve an attack based on your age. Your opinions are valid & you brought up a good discussion. Gecko_den, shame on you!

And it is your right to disagree, however I never stated that this was an adult only forum, and you have as much a right to your opinion as the next guy.

What I said was that your opinion didn't hold much water with me, and that is my right, to agree or disagree, or completely discount your opinion for what ever reason I choose.

It was obvious to you that your post was going to meet with resistance, or else you wouldn't have started it with "Don't flame me". And my post was more in response to the other child who painted all breeders with the wide brush of money hungry
lizard farmers who neglected their geckos by keeping them in rack systems. As if a few plastic plants and some playsand in a glass tank makes it anything but a glass tank with a few plastic plants and some playsand.

So as buffysmom said, "shame on me" for voicing my opinion of your opinion.

Ok, I have a few things to add. And I'm going to agree with both Gecko_den and Buffys mom. Gecko Den, I agree with some of the stuff you said. You don't have to have fancy looking tanks, all the pretty pictures, wonderful plants and perfectly shaped driftwood to take good care of geckos. For example, when my leo got sick, the cage looked so bad. It was a shoe box with paper towl, a smaller box and a water dish. It had all the essentials, and it worked perfectly.I understand that money isn't growing in your backyard. But just because I don't live on my own yet doesn't mean I don't understand that. And Buffys mom, you are right too. Just cuz ppl don't live on their own doesn't make their oppinion worthless (all though you have every right to disregard it). I researched geckos for almost a year, learned almost everything.

Gecko_Den, who every got pissy about not having a pretty cage was wrong, but don't bring us young ppl down bcuz of them.

nasr_36 Oct 07, 2003 08:53 PM

if a young costomer wants to buy a leo from you, would you turn him down? Why, because you dont care about their opinions?

..just thought i'd ask..

If I didn't think you would provide proper care, you bet your ass I would. Not to mention that the law prevents me from entering into a legal contract with anyone under the age of eighteen.

You may think that "breeders" only see little dollar signs with legs and a tail, but I spend many hours caring for these geckos. Not to mention the fact that I watch them hatch and grow and have an attachment to each and every one of them. And at shows I have sent kids, with money in their hands, back to get their parent(s) before I would sell to them. And just so you don't think I'm picking on kids, i have also refused to sell to adults that i didn't think would be good owners.

I've recently been trying to purchase a WC snake, and thus have been dealing with a bunch of wholesalers and importers trying to find a healthy one. I'm not sure the people who started this thread have dealt with people who were ACTUALLY in it for the money, but some of the people I have been talking to are, and quite obviously. It's an experience that just kind of eats away at your soul. So I just want to hug all leopard gecko breeders for not being like that.

(I already have a male of this species, but I want a female because CB ones are almost impossible to find and I want other people to be able to enjoy healthy, acclimated animals. Wow.. now that I think about it... they'll be worth quite a bit of money too. Oh well).

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?
