CENTRAL QUEENSLAND NEWS (Emerald, Australia) 20 September 13 Snake awareness really catching on in Emerald (Kaitlyn Gutzke)
As temperatures soar, our slithery friends have been making some early appearances around town.
First Strike Reptile Rescues Shane Bailey's phone has been ringing off the hook with the onset of the warm weather.
Mr Bailey said he expected the upcoming season to be a busy one for the Emerald region, but said with understanding and awareness from the community, it should be smooth slithering.
"I thought, being a rural community, people would be more likely to get the gun out and shoot snakes, but there are a lot of people out on properties who are willing to learn and would rather get rid of the snake without killing it," he said.
"They are starting to get a little bit more aware and understand... snakes aren't trying to hurt them.
"There is no excuse for killing snakes. It doesn't matter if it is venomous or not - you shouldn't kill it.
"Snakes are not all bad and about 90% of the ones I have caught are non- venomous," he said.
Mr Bailey shed light on the factors that could contribute to snakes populating yards.
"There are three things snakes look for - shelter, water and food - so if you can eliminate these factors, you will reduce the risk of snakes coming into your yard," he said.
"It is not going to 100% it, it never will, but it will help eliminate the interaction."
If a snake is spotted in your yard or home, Mr Bailey said it was extremely important to stay calm.
"When I go to a house call... I sort of walk in matter-of-factly and calmly place the snake in the bag, but they're expect
ing me to do a barrel roll into the room and start yelling," Mr Bailey laughed.
"It is all about staying calm, keeping an eye on the snake until I get there, and education is key. If you can't eliminate snakes, make sure you talk to your kids about snake awareness."
