COWICHAN VALLEY CITIZEN (British Columbia) 20 September 13 Letter: One-eyed frogs warn of nature's health?
I was trying out a kayak at Somenos Lake one cloudy weekend afternoon. While unloading the boat from the roof of my car, a family strolled past to the water's edge. They were intrigued by the number of small frogs that call the algae bloom their home...hundreds of them.
While I gathered my paddles and lifejacket on shore, the teenagers were scooping frogs up in their hands. "Look, this one only has one eye," she said.
The other exclaimed, "This one too!" As I relaxed on the water, taking in my beautiful surroundings, I couldn't help but think of Somenos Marsh and health. Perhaps nature is not feeling too well these days. Do we wait until paramedics are needed before we take the symptoms seriously? I sincerely hope not.
