LOWELL SUN (Massachusetts) 30 September 13 Giant snake becomes roadkill (Samantha Allen)
Bedford: The police department reported Sunday that it received a rather unusual call over the weekend -- a large exotic snake in the middle of the road.
One official said the responding officer was skeptical. But when he arrived on scene Saturday at 6:25 p.m., he found either a large python or boa constrictor in the street near 44 Shawsheen Road. The snake had been struck and killed by a passing vehicle.
The station reported that the officer returned to the department with a snake in a trash bag and disposed of its remains.
Police were unable to confirm the snake's specific species or its exact length.
Boa constrictors and pythons, among the largest in the world, are not native to the area and likely escaped from or were released by a collector.
As of Sunday morning, the department said they hadn't received any calls reporting a missing or lost snake. Officials were unable to say why a snake was out on Shawsheen Road but said the incident was certainly atypical.
