unsure about hibernation

antariel Oct 07, 2003 09:14 PM

Scraps seems to be sleeping more then usual but still runs for food when he sees the feeding tongs... the temperature averages out at about 100 with the occasional 5 degree flux.. he is also burrowing underneath the cage carpet and lying on top of his heating pad, going against the purpose of the carpet

is he trying to hibernate? i was hoping to avoid it since i want him to grow instead of sleep for several months, but i'm not sure what's going on.. he'll eat his food then go back to sleeping, i'm afraid that if he is trying to hibernate he'll get that stomach rot from the food being in there... will he start to refuse food if preparing for hibernation? i don't want him to die over the winter.. or what can i do for him if he does

WEll, I'm just going to take a stab at this. Are you saying your average temp in the cage is 100? If it is, that's a bit high. The cool side should be in the 80's during the day. But you did say he was laying on the heating pad, but of course he could be "basking" on it. If the temps are that high all over the cage, he may be hiding from "the heat of the day". Just a guess :|
