new idea- localize temps for babies.

reuben May 27, 2003 04:20 PM

A crazy idea hit me today while I was debating whether to heat my cluch or leave it at room temperature as I usually do. I'm not in the US but believe that local temps, including the daytime highs and nighttime lows are similar to those found in a corn's natural habitat, say, South Carolina. Then I thought I should check one of these weather web sites on the net to compare my local temps to temps in South Carolina or Georgia. Then I thought that maybe one of the more computer oriented people reading this could write a program that could "read" the temp info provided on such a weather web site and translate it into a computer-controlled thermostat. Perhaps the link could help create "locality-bred" newbies in domestic environments. True, it's probably not worth the effort, but it's real late over here which makes me think there's a touch of genious somewhere in here. Any takers?

I am by no means even remotely close to being able to help you realize it tho..... The only point I would like you to consider is the fact that eggs in the wild are not laid in areas that will usually stay at the regular air temperature. If you take into consideration the fact that eggs are found in the wild generally in rotting logs and piles of leaves, these are situations that naturally give off heat and will insulate the eggs, keeping them at a more consistent temperature. Rotting vegetation naturally gives off heat as it decomposes, keeping eggs naturally warmer.
Just some thoughts.. curious to see anyone else's...

Ya know, i think there is some genius there I can't believe there isn't one out there yet. Seems to me last year someone was talking about making something like that so he could monitor and control temps while he was at work. But I have no idea if it was someone here or where.

There are programs for monitoring wether all around the world. WeatherBug is one. The free version has advertising, but what the heck, it's free www.weatherbug.com But you can have it set to show your temp all the time, or the temp in SO.carolina, florida, I think you get up to 5 places you can "bookmark", so you always have one click access to those temps. Won't help with the thermostat idea, but at least you get to know the real weather in the corns home states.

but keep an eye out for computer controlled temps, it's coming I'm sure, pc geeks can't sit around idly when an idea like this is floating around

a lot of newer office buildings have their whole HVAC and lights controlled by PC. Run probes into a box the box reports temps to PC. Each cage could be its own zone. Each zone could be set for min/max temps and even be day/night programmed. the pc could then micro-manage each cages temp. or to keep it simpler just monitor one cage for like setups and control all cages based on one probe/one setting. the box is like a thermostat except it just reports temps to pc and turns devices off/on when told.
