Record length for Elaphe dione (Steppes Rat)....

Terry Cox Oct 07, 2003 09:22 PM

I measured my w/c female from Seoul, South Korea, yesterday at over 46 inches. According to K.D.Schulz ('96), dione can get up to 120 cm, or @47 inches. I wonder if that was a Far Eastern snake? Anyway, my female was near a record length for the species. She also laid 16 viable eggs in 2002, which is the record number for dione. Fifteen of them hatched and I still have two pairs left. Will get some pics soon. BTW, the male, which is from the same location, is only a little over three ft. in length, showing the sexual dimorphism in this species.

Thought this info might be interesting for dione fans

The first female S.Korean dione I got from you that came from your females first cluch is a lot bigger than the 2 males. She's got a lot of color on her too. Thanks for the info.

Terry,

She has stopped growing now, since she passed away last winter during brumation. I believe she was quite old, as she was about 40 inches when I got her in 1996, and the previous owner had caught her as an adult and had her a couple years. Same for the male from Seoul. I was in the process of preserving her yesterday when I measured her. That's how I got such an accurate measurement.

I also have a female from that first clutch (2001), and she is larger than a male, her brother, from that clutch. My female is pretty dark, because I kept a darker one with more pattern to breed back to the original male. I want to try to isolate his color and pattern. The 2001 male I kept is darker too, but has a pretty cool pattern. Your 2001 female is probably one of the lighter colored ones, although there were very few to choose from in that clutch.

Glad the info is helpful TC.

One of the males you sent me first has a lot of color. I was thinking male and typed female. That's the one my wife has decided for the breeder male. I didn't know how long you had the female and how big she was when you got her. I am glad you were able to breed her and produce some offspring with her genes as opposed to a hypomelanistic female dione that seems to be in captivity for years and not bred. Just my opinion.
