WHYALLA NEWS (Australia) 15 October 13 Swimming snake scares fisherman (Kirsty Davis)
Local man Lachie Anning recently had the surprise of his life when our fishing at Blackie Point last week.
Fishing for salmon trout, Mr Anning was alone when he spotted a deadly eastern brown snake swimming in front of him right near the shoreline.
"I thought it was weeds at first, but then I recognised it was a brown snake coming in with the tide," Mr Anning said.
Instead of doing what most of would and leaving as quickly as possible, Mr Anning decided to pull out his phone and get some amazing footage of the snake.
"Originally I recorded it just to show my Mrs," Mr Anning said.
"But then I decided to put it on the Whyalla Fishing Page to let people know."
The snake was estimated to be around four or five feet long, the enormity of the snake was not completely visible until it slithered its way up onto the rocks.
Mr Anning said Blackie Point, not far from Fitzgerald Bay, is a popular spot for teenagers and young families.
"It is the last thing you would expect to see on the coast," Mr Anning said.
"I know kids go down there and it can be hard to see in the water when you're swimming or fishing."
Mr Anning said that while growing up he had plenty of exposure to snakes as his home was within walking distance to a river, but this particular one did catch him by surprise.
"It freaked me out a bit when it got onto land, and because I was on my own its a long way to drive home with a venomous bite," he said.
"I just wanted to create more awareness for people when taking their family down there, you just don't expect to see it - maybe a shark but never a snake."
Mr Anning's up close and personal footage can be viewed on the Whyalla Fishing Page at https://www.facebook.com/WhyallaFishingPage.
