Kuching: A man in his 40s would probably think twice about poking a sleeping crocodile, or any other animal for that matter, in future.
His attempt at humouring himself while waiting for authorities to arrive after he came across the reptile nearly cost him his hand.
The 1.65m beast was apparently in deep slumber on the road near the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching in Sejingkat on Friday midnight.
The man, who declined to be named, chanced upon it while driving there and quickly alerted the authorities.
While waiting for them, he decided to get out from the safety of his car and poke the reptile with a piece of wood.
He told reporters later that he was trying to find out if the crocodile was alive or dead.
“It suddenly woke up and had a go at me. Luckily I had kept my distance or else my hand would have ended up in its jaws.”
A team of Civil Defence Department personnel reached the scene later and wrangled up the reptile.
It was brought to the headquarters before being handed over to the Forestry Department.
