eating problems

KingDome Nov 15, 2013 08:58 PM

I have two small mandarin rat snakes. One eats very well and is twice the size of the other one. Its eating was very sporadic in the beginning, now I can't get it to eat at all for a while now. Starting to see its back muscle and looking very skinny. I feed them small pinkies. If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them. I am afraid I am going to loose him. Thanks

It could be a million things, the best way to start is a Vet visit. To make sure its not a health issue. Once that is done, you can work on husbandry.

I am not one of those, its fall, so your snake wants to hibernate. I am one of those, its fall, so your snake may need its cage updated to keep it feeding, or let it bromate.

As you mentioned, your snake is loosing weight, that is a whole different concern. So Vet please.

You may already know this, but Mandarin ratsnakes are notoriously difficult to feed in captivity. Most are wild caught and frequently have heavy parasite loads. I know they prefer cooler temps than most North American colubrids, but I am nowhere near an expert with this species. You may want to try the Asian/European Ratsnake forum, if it is not totally dead.
