A sad story (long)

Skyz Oct 07, 2003 10:57 PM

Hi all! I'm posting this here just because I need to rant over how stupid & heartless some people can be! I work at a pet shop (yes I know a lot of you think all pet shops are bad. And if you ask me ALOT of them are.) We specialize in reptiles, there are only a few employees and all of us have over 10 snakes and have had them for many years. Not to mention all the other reptiles we have. I personally have 5 Burms. My smallest is 7 feet almost 8 and my largest (and my baby) 13-14 feet. They vary in age from 1 year to 5 years. I've raised 3 of them up from hatchlings and two I acquired as adults. Anyways- At the store I work at we do carry a few Burms but not very many and not very often. A guy came in tonight with his girlfriend/wife and two kids. He carried in a baby Burmese. It was in a kritter keeper that was about 12 inches by 6 inches. He DID have it on aspen bedding and it had a water dish. The aspen bedding was very dirty and you could start to see mold growing on it from spilled water. He said he had the snake for several weeks and had been told to feed it pinkies. (Mind you the burm was about 15-18 inches.) He had told his girlfriend/wife who was probably about 8 months pregnant that his snake would stay under 5 feet. He said that he plans to sell the snake when it gets that big so he can make a lot of money. (The other pet shop he bought it from told him that big burms are worth a LOT of money.)
(BTW: When he brought the snake in he didn't even know WHAT KIND it was!) Well when I started telling him the real facts about burms and showed him a book on them he continued by saying when the snake gets that big he'll let it go to eat his neighbors dogs! He ended up leaving with a very mad girlfriend and a dead mouse to feed the poor burm who had no heat and a VERY tiny cage. It makes me so SICK to see people like that. If I had my choice I would have taken the snake away from him. He didn't seem to care about the snake in the least! And for the people who must have sold him the snake. THEY DON'T DESERVE TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR ANY REPTILES. The saddest part of all though is I see this happen EVERY day. Before any burms leave the store try to make sure people know everything I can think of as to why burms DON'T make good pets. And if they are REALLY sure they want a burm and want to set one up right THEN I tell them the good things. Sometimes I want to say "No one should have burms" but then I think "Then everyone who is responsible with them and wouldn't have these beautiful creatures". I just wish there was some easy way to draw the line. Anywayz- Sorry this is so long. I just needed to rant.

That is sad, and heartless. Some people just think snakes are for looks and aren't "real" pets. Although I'd take one of my snakes over a cat or dog anyday.

At least you set him straight on some facts about the burm. Sad to hear though

Take Care,

Joel Smith

i work at a pet store also. if someone came in with any snake in that condition i would have taken it and not given it back to him unless he bought a book and a proper house for it. then i might think about letting him take it back. i hate people that dont care about the animals that they own. and even worse is the uninformed pet store employes that just want the sale. thats all i have to say
