Tarahumara boa demeanor

markg Dec 04, 2013 03:35 PM

I have a neonate male that I have had for a few months. When he is in his tub, he will strike and hiss non-stop once the tub is opened. When I hook him with a snake hook, he hisses and strikes at anything moving aside from the hook.

Once he is out for at least a few minutes, he will start to crawl from the hook to my hand holding the hook without biting, but he is still wary of movement and will strike at my other hand while I clean the cage. But at least he stops hissing and seems a bit calmer.

When I place him back in his tub, the scene starts all over again - hisses, strikes.

Aside from all of that, he eats fine, sheds fine, looks great, no mites.

You folks with Mexican boas, especially Tarahumaras - is this typical neonate behavior? Is there a possibility that he may outgrow this?

(He may be a Tarahumara mixed with Sonoran judging by the looks of his Mom, not sure, but the question still stands..)

I have produced at least 50 sonorans and leopards. Some of them start off hissy but as long as I keep handling them properly they usually settle down after a time. Everyone is different but usually by the end of 6 months they are very calm. I am sure some boas never really settle down but I have not encountered that myself.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. He is still very small, so I hope he calms down with time.
