Look what I found...pic from South Africa

I was talking to my parents last weekend about a trip they made to Africa 7 or 8 years ago. I was a stupid kid in high school at the time so I didn't pay much attention to them at the time. I don't think I even looked at their pictures...until this weekend. They had two albums full of excellent pictures. They went to Kreuger (sp?) and saw all kinds of animals. Then I stumbled upon this pic of an albigularis? Do you think this is a blackthroat or whitethroat? I still don't understand the differences. This pic was taken in the northern part of South Africa near Zimbabwe. My mom said she saw almost 20-30 of them on some days. Wish I would have went with them...talk about being a stupid teenager...7 years later, and now I would kill for the same opportunity.

Hi,
Many Thanks for sharing your parents photo with us. Would it be possible to get a more exact locality data from your parents? I wrote an in-depth distribution on V. albigularis and other African varanids last year (Journal of Biogeography, 29:1643-1701, [2002]), and I am writing a Part II, and would like to include it in my paper....having a photograph of any monitor with known locality is important and alot rarer than one might think!

Would it be possible to get a duplicate of this photo in slide and/or print form, for my files??

Many Thanks,
mbayless
