My beardie is diagnosed with Coccidia...now what?

djfuente Oct 08, 2003 09:11 AM

I just got a fecal done today it it was diagnosed with coccidia. I have to take Giblet in tomorrow for an antibiotic but I was wondering if Parazap works. I know it is aimed more towards parasites, it's just that I know antibiotics might set her back because she'll lose her appetite during her treatment and then some. The vet said that he found high level of coccidia...so are antibiotics the best route?

You definately need to use the antibiotic! In addition, you should use AcidophiLiz to help keep the good bacteria, that is normally in their digestive tracts, from being wiped out. This will help with appetite.

I would start using the Parazap after the round of antibiotics is completed; it works best as a preventative.

***The absolute key in treating the coccidia is CLEANILINESS! Disinfect his tank & everything in it. You may want to use 2 plastic tub setups for him until it clears; one for him to be in while the other is being disinfected. Switch between them at least daily. You should only use paper towel substrate & paper plates to put his food on. After handling him or anything with which he's been in contact, wash your hands & change clothing so you're not re-contaminating disinfected items.

This has always been an issue for me...how do I disinfect everytime she poops? Like when she does it on her log, can I clean it with a light bleach solution everytime, or alcohol?

use paper towels and at night while she is on treatment, take out and soak the items you can in bleach water, then rinse and leave soaking in clean water overnight and put back in the morning.

Here is a link to a routine we adapted to bearded dragons that was by Dr Roger Klingenberg for treating and cleaning during coccidia. A lot of work, but it does work

Should I administer probiotics to giblet while undergoing treatment or should I wait till afterwards? I have heard a lot about yellow fungus and I do not want her to contract that since she is on Albon. I was thinking Acidophiliz was ok since Parazap is a bit too pricy since I just did the whole vet thing today.

...starting it on the 2nd or 3rd day of Albon. As CheriS mentioned in an earlier post, continue using it for about 5 days after the Albon tx. is completed. It's very important to have a follow-up fecal done after you've finished the round of Albon, so you may want to go ahead & schedule one if your vet hasn't already done so.
