Latin substrates

reuben Oct 08, 2003 10:22 AM

As I don't live in the US, I would appreciate it if someone could give the Latin names for Aspen or other non-oily wood which I could shave down for substrate. My locally available commercial substrates are either Pine or Eucalyptus with an overpriced opition of unidentifiable origin called "chipsy" being marketed for reptiles. I have used the pine in the past, but understand that the oils or scents irritate the resperatory system. I see alot of people referring to Aspen, but without a scientific name, I can't be sure I know what you're talking about. My plan is to order a bunch and shave it down for my own purposes (assuming it's affordable). All help is appreciated. Those of you forum-ites who live in Holland, what do you use? German names might also be of help. Thanks

I did a search and only found a listing for Quaking Aspen. I'm not sure if there are other types of Aspen, but the scientific name for this type is Populus tremuloides.

Just a suggestion, but why don't you consider using papertowels or newspaper as substrate? If you want something for them to be able to bury in, you can use a paper shredder and shred newspaper and then use that.

It would be much easier than what you proposed. Also, depending on where you would get the aspen, you might have to worry about it having been treated with chemicals. If it was you wouldn't be able to use it.
