My female fell on her back... (more)

gabrielmtl Oct 08, 2003 10:26 AM

I was trying to get her out of her cage yesterday for a bi-monlthy full cage cleaning, and even tho I always have a hell of a time to get her out of there, yesterday was hardcore. While I was trying to get her to go on a long stick, she pushed herself away from it and fell on her back/side at the bottom of my enlosure, which is covered by tiles. She stayed there for 10 seconds and then walked back up. She seemed fine after that.

im sure they fall down trees in the wild if they try to escape from predators... but should I be worried? Should I have her X-Rayed?

they can drop out of tree tops straight down to avoid predators. as long as she isn't acting like she is in pain, or has any odd limbs sticking straight out or unoveable, i wouldn't worry about it.

Hopefully, she is ok as long as she doesn't look injured...though it couldn't be good for her to fall on that hard tile. In the wild, they have leaves and such to cushion their fall a bit.

You know, I worried about that when I saw your set up with the tile on the bottom...it looks beautiful, but I thought about if one falls. Maybe you put something over the tile that would not be so hard. I know that defeats the purpose of all your work, but, personally, I'd worry if she falls again...though, they don't seem to fall that often unless we're messing with them...LOL! Funny how that works.

Thank you for your feedback.

I am defenetly going to build the next one with that in mind. But at 4 feet high, it could be wood or melamine and the impact would pretty much be the same. But I am thinkig of something even for my current setup that would still make it easy to clean (the way the tiles are setup, cleaning the bottom it is the easiest thing.)

She doesnt look injured at all. Ill keep a eye on her tho. (which I always do anyway lol more like 2 eyes)

my male veiled has a habit of taking flying leaps off of you when he has had enough. if u don't catch it in time, well, lets just say that he has fallen a lot farther than 4 feet onto gravel or cement, and then after a couple of seconds, he takes off running. the first time i really worried about him, but this just seems to be part of him..........

I dont own a veiled so take this as it is...

They sound like a pain in the butt. Bite, hiss, jumping 4 feet to the ground to get away from you.

Sounds like owning a monitor or iguana that is just plain mean.
