Trimeresurus Albolabris gender question

snakeskin Oct 08, 2003 02:23 PM

Hi all.

I got 2 Trim. albolabris as a present from a friend, I'm very happy with them

I noticed some differences in the animals, after a conversation with Skin78 and Iwan Hendrikx (both dutch forum visiters here) they told me that the white labial and lateral stripe is purely a sexual dimorphic trait.

Only the males have vibrant white stripes whereas the females have a more subdues striping.

Iwan is currently looking up the article, but I thought I'd ask here.

Is it true there is sexual dimorphism in T.albolabris?

Bye,

The only true dimorphism that I know of is when the species is adult, the males are much more slender and shorter than the females. Female albos may be 1/3 to 1/2 larger than the males.
Best...

Hi there Peter,

In my experience T. albolabris show a high degree of sexual dimorphism. Even as newborns the males can be discerned on their bold white striping along the lateral flanks and sometimes on the lips. They are also darker green dorsally with a sharp contrast the dorsal and ventral coloration. Thgey are also more slender, and smaller as adults. Females on the other hand are a gentler, brighter green colour, sometimes with a very subtle white lateral stripe (this usually fades by adulthood).

Hope this helps

Ian

Thanks for the replies, I've went through some books which also mention dimorphism, so, my gamble now is that I've got a pair

hope to get 3 more later this week

Thans for the info
