Hardware cloth Question

iso Oct 08, 2003 02:29 PM

Hi all

I see a lot of suggestions to use 1/4" hardware cloth for ventilated cage building. I was curious as to why some say use pvc and others do not. I understand there is a concern regarding rust, but the non coated is galvanized so rust should not be an issue.

Is there another reason to use the pvc coated? And if you use pvc coated..what is the easiest color to "see through".

thank you very much

The reason some people don't like using the hardware cloth is because, at least for iguanas (which is what I deal with), they can hurt themselves on it. An animal rubbing up against the walls, digging, scratching at the metal will rub themselves to bleeding. I have seen this before (when I didn't know what I was doing) and it is very depressing for everyone involved. The plastic/pvc coated mesh is less abrasive and also is a little more forgiving. Hope this helps.
