red tegu in love with grapes ?!

stinner Oct 08, 2003 05:08 PM

Hey I was feeding my red tegu mondo worms about a week ago and decided to put grapes in with the worms so they wouldn't die if they weren't all eaten. When I came back I noticed the grapes were gone which I assumed was from the worms. However, the next time I saw him go straight for the grapes and leave the worms, which isn't like him to pass up mondo worms. Anyways now he comes up to me to take them from my hand (something he never would do before for anything). And when given the choice of grapes or worms, monitor diet, or other fruits he picks through his once favorite foods to find the grapes. Has anyone else tried feeding grapes before? I assume it is harmless to let him pig out on them from time to time, I was just curious if anyone else has tried feeding them and what their tegus reactions were to them.

Funny isn't it? Grapes are really good for them though. The first time I gave my tegu grapes he wasn't sure what to do with them. Then when he finally bit down hard enough he found they were really yummy. Now I use them as treats and he comes a running when he sees them.

goes for apple chunks warmed in the microwave, canned fruit and canned pineapple. I might have to try the grapes again.

Not sure why. It's better to be safe than sorry.
