How often should you feed an adult BD? 13 months

Gecko2525 Oct 08, 2003 08:03 PM

I still currently feed him dusted crickets and salad because he never really took the rep-cal pellets. Should I try getting him on the pellets? I just didn't like soaking them first and I think they were to hard for him to eat with out being soft. I personally won't eat them either....yuck...they smell gross.

If I still continue to just feed crickets and salad, how often should I?

Also are pinkies ok to feed to adult BDs as a treat? If so what size is best and fur or no fur.

Thanks!

Salads should be offered daily, live foods every 2 - 3 days. Are you sure they were the rep cal brand you tried? You said they smell yucky.... Rep cal smells fruity. The pellets are not too hard when not soaked. My adults have a dish in their cages at all times and I even have a couple here that eat all their dry pellets before they eat their veggies.

Pinky mice are ok as an occassional treat, but they are very high in fat and usually only used for gravid females and females that have just laid a clutch of eggs.

Salads get fed daily at all ages. Most dragons around 12-16 months start eating more greens then crickets depending on where they are at with their development (growth and weight). Depending on the size of your dragon live feeding can get dropped back to every other day. Pellets are not a must but they are good for variety if you can get them to eat them they are good. As for the mice if it's not an under weight dragon or a breeding female with problems getting weight back on before her next clutch there really is no need for them, but if you must just born hairless pinkies are fine. Really no need for them and a lot of breeders who used to use them are no longer feeding them as they have no problem with proper diets to get them back up to weight with worms and such. Great healthy treats would be silk worms, butter worms, goliath worms, even super worms for adults are fine, and if the dragon needs fattening up go ahead and add a few wax worms. With the worms just don't feed any of them every feeding. Dragons will hold out for them and won't take there crickets anymore. Use them as treats. I suggest giving them a few crickets then a worm few more crix another worm, like that. At that age I haven't had a beardie under 18 inches and 500 grams which is rather large and would be considered full grown by many, but not too them. Some grew a lot larger. If your beardie is on the small side and is still growing you can still feed both daily. It's when you notice them not growing anymore, or just gaining weight with no growth you start cutting back on fats and live feeders. Some beardies give up the live food at a certain age on their own, and some will eat them forever if offered. These are the ones you need to cut back with, and push greens. At Least that is how I do it here. At that age I cut back to live foods every other day still dusted, and always greens daily.
