Rotties and other breeds/dogs?

Deerhounds Mar 20, 2003 03:13 PM

How are Rotties, in general, with other dogs and other breeds? I have Scottish Deerhounds and one Borzoi. My heart dog, Colleen, was a chow mix who may or may not have had some Rottie in her. She is now gone to the Bridge after a long and wonderful life, and I miss having a dog who is somewhat protective. (Scottish Deerhounds are slightly less protective than a stuffed animal. You can at least throw a stuffed animal at someone.)

I have a dog-aggressive cattle dog mix, female, right now, and most likely will not bring another dog into my family while she is around. She gets along fine with my other dogs but she and Colleen were mortal enemies. She is 12, though, so I am trying to plan for the future.

Is it likely that a Rottie would fit into my pack? Do they tend to be dog aggressive?

Christie,
I know of a lot of rotties that live peacefully with other breeds of dogs of all sizes. Mainly I would say be very up front with the breeder that you need a dog from a line that is not known for dog agression and also getting a pup, as you know will help vs an adult dog. Unless you might be willing to go with a rescue that has been in a foster home so they know it is very easy going with other dogs.
The only thing I would be worried about is as the pup gets a few months old and is heavier they tend to be very rowdy and I am sure you are aware that you would have to be on top of any rough play so that none of your other dogs get hurt accidently by the pups and his size.
As you know I have both a rottie and french mastiffs and so far no problems and my rottie is not real friendly with strange dogs but is very excepting of pups that grow up here.
Good luck and I would recommend you start talking to some breeders now to see if there are any that might have a litter coming up in a year or so that might be what you want.

Sadly, same sex aggression is common enough. BUT with your nonaggressive dogs, you shouldn't have a problem. But honest Christie, they are nothing like Chows. I love my rotties, but you need another CHOW darn it!

Just like with people, IMO, Rotties vary in temperment. A lot of it has to do with genetics. There is an excellent breeder in CA, well I'm sure there are several actually, 8^).

If you want to go with a Rottie pup, we will get you 2 connected. She has good dogs. But..... there are also a few DDBs in foster care in CA sure you don't want a Dogue???

I'll get you some info and email it to you.

I have always had Rotties with other breeds and never had a problem. Drayko occasionally gets a hair up his butt and goes after Mulligan and Sally, but it's more a show of strength than an attack. Carly kicks his butt, so he doesn't bother her, LOL! Rotties can be dog aggressive, but even though Drayko is, he is fine with my dogs. Actually he is fine with small dogs and puppies...it's just the big dogs he likes to go after, so I think he has self esteem issues, LOL! I bet you could go through a rescue and get a nice, soft-tempered Rottie that would get along great with your dogs. They are definitely my 'heart breed' and I will always have one!

That testosterone poisoning <G>. Although, hell, bitches can be as bad or worse. Some lines are worse than others. Connor is great in public even with posturing dogs, and he's tolerant of little male dogs and even comical with aggressive ones. But a male dog big enough to be a challenge and he's ready to rock and roll. I could never have a large breed male live in this house safely unless it was totally submissive. You lucked out with easy going mulligan, and christies dogs are not dog aggressive so they would be fine.

But you are ALL MISSING THE POINT!!

SHE NEEDS A CHOW/CHOWMIX!
