7 month old jack starting to pee in house? help

greg_mck Mar 23, 2003 05:38 PM

My 7 month old Jack Russell has started to pee in the house again. He was completely housebroken so I thought until this week when he pee-d in the house numerous times. Sometimes he will do it right in front of me, other times not. Yesterday he was outside for a good 15 minutes, then I let him in and within 5 minutes of being inside, pee-d on the carpet.
Does anyone have any clue as to why he might be doing this?
Please help me, I have been told to fix the problem, or I have to get rid of him.

Thanks
-Greg

OH NO. We need to help you fix this,so the puppy can stay.
sometimes it is just like Children, they have setbacks, but if he pee's in front of you he may have a slight bladder irritation.
put out a certain amount of water (like 3 cups) and measure how much he drinks say within 6 hours then count the times he pee's,if he is peeing and drinking both allot then he might need to checkup just to make sure.Dogs will pee with what looks like very little to just a few drops with a irinary(sp?) problem
Try this first and then if not working, you may have to go back to crate training and praising him highly when he goes pee outside.

He is not neutered... do you think that this could be causing the problem?

Thanks

Absolutely. He is just hitting adolescence and neutering him, while it won't unlearn a behavior, neutering will eliminate the drive to mark. Crate training is also helpful. He is hitting what in humans would be considered the "teenage" years. Dogs get every bit as willful as human adolescents. I wish you luck.

Hi,

When you take your dog outside, are you outside with him or do you just let him out? If you're just letting him out alone, you need to start going out with him and make sure that he is actually going. I have to do this with one of my dogs. She'll get interested in sniffing around and not do her business.

Before getting rid of him, find out if he has an Urinary Tract Infection. I'd also get him neutered right away and discuss this with your vet.

I think making sure he goes when he is outside, praising him when he goes, and not giving him the chance to go in the house will solve your problem. If he is doing it while you're not home, then you might have to invest in a crate.

You might also want to post this question to the Training board. There is someone there that has wonderful advice.

Good luck!
