Kennels

Mongrel Mar 31, 2003 04:23 PM

Hi,

Does anyone have plans on building an outdoor kennel for a big dog? I'm looking for something secure (to keep the dog in, and intruders out). Please post or direct me on where to find some.

Thanks a bunch.

You have to give us a better idea, you know? WHat size dog, and most importantly what type of dog. APBT are normally small so that leads me to believe that it is something other than what is normally posted here. German SHepards are large dogs and have plenty of folks frequenting the forum. But anyhow, APBT are the number one stolen dog. If you have something other than that I would worry about putting too much effort into kepping it secure. A lock and sturdy gate and wire should prove plenty. If you have a valuable APBT or one you want to keep enclosed better then I say the best way is to have a concrete floor. As the dog or someone could dig under the fence. Also, it'll be kept more sanitary. Next I would get the kennels gate of wrought iron, not regular fence material as many have cut through those pretty easy. Then I would attch some more material on top so people can't climb through the top, animals can't get in, and your dog can't climb out (yes I have heard of some folks dogs climbing out the wire fence). I would also put some like mesh stuff (bear with me I forget what it is called off hand) and put it like on half the sides and top for shade in the summer. Then for the lock get an American lock co. lock as they can't be cut with bolt cutters. Then if they want your dog bad enough they can get in with saws and what ever, but they have to want it pretty bad....

Hi Snakey,
Thanks for the reply. And yes, you caught me, I'm not a pit bull owner. The dog I want to build a kennel for is a Cane Corso; larger in size, but similar in appearance (which is why I worry about possible theft). He's a puppy, so it'll be no problem taking him. I'm not very mechanically inclined, so would you know where I can find detailed plans? Perhaps from a book?

yeah I have spoken to some folks in the past but need to check it out again and ask around.....I'll have an answer within a day or so to let you know what I heard. By the way, buying one is going to run you kind of alot. Plus shipping something so heavy would be pretty high as well, but let me check it I could be wrong.....

Here is a link that will show you how to build with cocrete, etc. If you can't do it you should be able to pay someone a nominal fee to do a good job.
it is .....http://www.radixinc.com/dogs/kennels.html
Here are a few more......
http://www.yourfencestore.com/dogs/
http://www.american-fence.com/residential/dogs.htm
This one has a nice picture of what
i had in mind. The only thing is it can be pushed, so if it could be anchored then it would be ok...Here is the link....http://www.behlenmfg.com/leg/html/dogkennels.htm..............................This should keep you busy for a while and give you enough contacts to see who to go to with this type of job......

lock the pits up in kennels...then keep a couple of rotts roaming the backyard..that and some good lights should keep em away.

Good idea. Hey ra_tzu, you got any pics of your dog?

Why stop there? ;>? No, I'm going to restrain myself and be serious. I DO suggest putting in motion sensor lights set to the most sensitive setting (and hope the tree branches don't set them off, as mine sometimes did.
