Meet the Alaskan Klee Kai!

phtasha Apr 03, 2003 03:11 PM

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a recently created dog, modelled to being a scaled-down version of the Husky. There are Standards (over 15-17", Miniatures (over 13-15" and Toys (up to 13".
Weight should be in proportion to height. All Klee Kais, to meet the standard, must have a strong mask, wedge shaped skull, strong rounded ears, well spaced eyes, curved tail that touches the back. The breed was developed by Linda S. Spurlin, of Wasilla, Alaska. Registry is UKC. To date, there are still few Klee Kais in existance, though there is a breed rescue. To learn more about this breed, visit the Rare Breed Network www.rarebreed.com/ and check the alphabetical breed list.

that's pretty cool!

One thing that gets me is that people go about developing new breeds on their own, I don't know... just that enough dogs out there needs home already, y'know?

True, but up in Alaska? I thought it was interesting (and good, actually) that these breeders had a working rescue, just in case some of their dogs fell through the cracks somehow. Not everyone calls the breeder back when something happens (or knows who to call). I did kind of wonder, as I was reading about them - why take a Husky and scale it down? But then, I love big dogs and have had them all my life. Nothing under 50# ever in my house in the canine division.
