Our new pound doggie!!

SeaTuon Apr 04, 2003 02:30 PM

Hello.
I was just reading all messages. I realized not many people put messages on here. I just got a Jack Russell Wenseday. He is a sweet heart. is well mannered, quiet, doesn't pee or poop in the house. But we are having one small minor problem. We can't get him to eat Dog Food. We will not let him eat junk food. I use to be a Petsmart Dog Trainer, and learned that sometimes dogs will be stubburn and not eat for days. But once they get hungry enough they will eat. So the last two days have been trying. He went after our three parakeets once and in a result of trying to stop him he went after me. I did not scream but used a stern voice told him 'nien' (Our word for No). This morning My fiance went to take out the garbage and he attacked him while trying to get the food. Of course my fiance stopped him. He tries to get at wrappers and candy that someone might of left out on the street as well. It's hard to seem him like this. Last night we had a small break through he ate a little dog food. He will eat a little out of our hands, but I don't want to turn that into a habit. He is skinny and needs to eat.

We also have three cats and I use to take my smallest kitty to my training classes. She wasn't quite as nervous when around Colbi, our new Jack Russell. Yesturday we had a kitty break through and Lima (Our smallest kitty) let Colbi sniff her several times before she got fed up and growled. I think he only wants to play with them, I'm hopeing.

Any new advice would be great. But here is a picture of our cutie pie.

I am having to go through this with a dog that came back to me after he eat every shoe and dug up every plant in the yard, He doesn't want dog food only people food.
I have him in a crate to eat so nobody can steal "His" food,he is NOT fed anymore people food and he has barely touched his food. I am not going to give in and neither should you.
A dog will not starve himslef to death. They will eat when they get hungry enough.
Be stern. call it tough love if that helps.
Your dog is cute, very sweet look on that face, i think she just feels betrayed since she was getting everything her way before you changed her routine.
You may want to try a different dog food also. Sometimes they just don't like the smell, I try frozen Bill Jack and they have always eaten that and it is wondeful for them.
keep us informed.

Thank you for your suggestion. I also had put a message on the nutrition board which they suggested a BARF diet. I was saving that to all possibly last hope. Right now he is going on to his fourth day of not eating. I have given in a tiny bit with a scrap of food here and there. It's just hard to see him so skinny. When I take him to the dog park he likes to beg other people for treats, but thankfully they don't give any. How long do you think he can go without eating a full meal?? I have been giving him vitamins for nutrition in the morning.

We have actually tried Nutro, Iams, and Authority (Petsmart Brand) All high quality foods. I have heard of Bill Jack and it is worth a shot. I know that Bill Jack is pretty good food as well. I just don't want to go to the Cheap Brands, as they give very little nutrition in addition to have lots of By-Product (Anything in it You can think of).

I just hope I can stay more stubburn than he. But I have weak spot (My fiance) who doesn't want him to die!

Personally I do not use the packaged foods, we use a homemade diet, mostly raw. I do not think its "giving in" to a dog to try and find a food that appeals to him. Has he been checked for parasites btw? My dogs do not get "dog" food they get food fit for people to eat, keeps them healthier. If you do want to stick with bagged dog food use a brand that uses human grade meats and no cancer causing preservatives (Innova/SolidGold/California Natural etc) But I think your doggie may have a health problem and I would check that out first, its not natural for a dog to refuse food

I can see that he has lost allot of weight and condition,.but since he is so up on his toes and alert it looks as though he is not worse for it.
Has he started eating dog food yet?

YES! He has eaten wet authority (petsmart brand) It's a start. Once he gets more solid on the wet food, I plan to slowly insert dry food. But he is eating wet food. Now that he is getting use to us as his owner, he has begun to whine at night. I know ignoring him so he doesn't learn to continue the habit is one of the best things to do, but it's so hard to resist the sad whine. We put jazz music on, a night light, a small bed for him, and he still whined. I let him roam the apartment and we shut our bedroom door, After a couple minutes of whinning at our door he settled down on the couch. I'm sure he'll stop doing that once he realizes we aren't going anywhere, and where not taking him anywhere. Yesturday he ate a can and half of dog food. So far this morning he has eaten some wet food, but not a great deal.

We are hopeful, as he is getting happier by the day.
