Car sickness...

v_b_x Apr 16, 2003 09:21 AM

Another new problem Tyler and I have been experiencing is car sickness. We do a lot of driving and just in the past month or so he's been getting car sick. I think it is a nervous habit because the car doesn't have to be moving and he starts to salivate heavily. usually it takes the whole trip before he actually gets sick, but my poor car is taking a lot of stinky abuse.
I was thinking of practising putting him in and out of the car. Then jsut sitting int eh car for a little bit, talking to him and calming him down. Then maybe drive a block or so, take him out, walk him, put him back in and repeat the process. The only bad part is that we do a lot of driving...
Any other suggestions?

My dog didn't like tpo go for car rides and always is lying down. But what I did was just make him turn and face the window and opened the window and he'll look out. The thing he hates is the occasional idiot driver that causes me to hit the brakes and him flying to the dash board. But I usually catch him in time to prevent this. I say just take him for a bunch of short rides, say to the post office and back, or the Jack in the Box and back. And at the end of each ride give him a treat or two. Then after doing it enough times he'll think that he will get something every ride and will associate a "bad" thing with a good thing. I say keep up the rides. Also, I put an old blanket on his side so that in case of an accident, or to keep his hair off of the seats, it will be easily taken care of....That's all I can say.....Someone else may have better tips.....

Good technique to help desensitize him. Ginger snaps (the cookies) help calm the stomach, as would raw ginger - but I'm not certain how much raw ginger root to give, so easier to feed three very gingery ginger snaps. There is also melatonin which helps calm, and Bach's Rescue Remedy, which is flower essences (input Bach's Flower Essences into your browser to bring up the website then go down the list of flower essences to look for Rescue Remedy, which is a combination of several and should be at the end of the list). Four drops of RR on the tongue about 20 minutes before driving should help. Can't think of anything else off-hand.
