Sierra Mountain King (Lampropeltis zonata multicincta)

jimbat May 27, 2003 05:47 PM

Went on a backpacking trip this weekend and came across numerous snakes. 2 rubber boas, more garters than you can count, and one California Mountain king snake. To my surprise not one rattler which was just fine with me. These snakes were all at about 4500 feet.

If you would like I can post some photos.

Thanks
Jim B

I'd love to see some pictures! Whereabouts did you go? What time of day did you find the snakes? I just went backpacking in the Mendocino National Forest this weekend, found rattlers but no kings sadly (except for one huge california king on the road).

We went to the Ansel Adams Wilderness, most of the snakes were seen between 11:00 and 2:00 in the afternoon. I haven't even gotten the photos off the camera yet. Hopefully all get them posted tomorrow.
