Hi!
I just heard AKC is going to take this breed out of Miscellaneous and put into the Sport Group. What do the folks that own this breed think about that? Do you think it will ruin the breed to have them more offically part of AKC?

I think they should be moved out of the miscellaneous category. They sure are magnificent dogs. I don't own one, but I love the pictures posted in the photo gallery.

I don't own the breed either, but I do monitor a large and active forum about Australian Shepherds. Since being recognized by AKC, some owners have objected to the trend in show lines of Aussies of flashy white trim and heavy coats, the latter being useless for herding, which they were bred for. Rough collies also went from larger-headed dogs with moderate coat (and more brains, I think) to toothpick heads and huge coats and less brains than their forebears. There is always tension between those who want a breed to remain true to its roots and those who wish a working dog breed but without heavy drive, high energy or need for a "job". It's an interesting thought.
