My dachshund coughs after he drinks water.

turtlelord Apr 20, 2003 05:23 PM

Usually only in the morning of after a long walk. He will cough 3 or 4 times. The water is room temp and always fresh. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Tom

I would like to figure this out too. My miniature dachshund does the same thing

Hi! My oldest male dachshund (10 years) has been doing this since he was a puppy. I was really alarmed until I had two vets tell me that it is nothing to worry about...it is due to the trachea being 'bent' when the dog is drinking. (It causes a type of 'gagging' sound). They assured me it is harmless, and that removing his collar would help...it truly HAS! It seems that the collar pushes against the trachea and may be part of the cause. I removed Willie's collar except for when we go out, and it has all but solved the problem. He is the only one of my dachshunds that has ever had the problem!
