Yorkie running out into the street

Ambian3844 Apr 23, 2003 09:55 AM

We don't have a fenced in yard at home and We used to be able to take him out and he would roam around go to the bathroom and just walk around. Lately if a car or person goes by he runs right out into the road (thank god the 3 times it happened the cars stopped) so now we take him out on a leash wich isn't a problem, Its just that now if we want to be out we have to tie him up and I feel so bad. Does anybody have any suggestions, (cant afford to fence the yard right now)

One idea would be to erect a temporary fence like the one we have around our dog potty yard. You can use welded wire on steel t-posts. It's not very expensive, is durable, and can be removed whenever you decide to do so. Check your home-improvement store for the materials.

Otherwise, I heartily recommend using a leash, with a chest harness. You don't want to put leash pressure against the throat of a Yorkie, with the breed's predisposition to collapsing tracheas. And don't leave him on a tie-out outside unless you are right there with him. It's dangerous both to his physical safety and to his temperament.

I also would recommend you using a harness. You can get one of the hook things that you put in the grass and keep a long metal leash so you can hook him up. How big is your dog? I wouldn't leave Tiffany out alone without me there watching her because they're so small I'm always afraid some big bird will swoop in and carry her off. I've definitely heard of that happening.

How about purchasing an exercise pen? You can get one for about 50.00 AND you can take it anywhere, set it up in about 2 seconds and your kid is SAFE.

That's a great idea. I didn't think about an exercise pen. I have one for Tiffany and sometimes I even use it in the house. You can make them any size that you want.
