raw meat in a dogs diet

aries May 05, 2003 10:44 AM

i have read so many articles about feeding your dog raw meat. i do not know who or what to believe. my dog an apbt is 9months old and he is intact. he gets what i believe are pimples on his lip area so i have been putting tea tree oil on them and it seems to make them smaller. but i have recently found out that his skin condition could be from a lack in his diet. his skin is also dry and flakes but his coat is shiny and soft. some sites say raw meat will help his skin and some sites say raw meat is full of bacteria and parasites. now i have tried to buy very high quality foods and he does not like them. i do not want to feed him only raw meat but i was wandering if it would be good or bad to supplement him with an ouce or two of raw meat every other day. or should i try something like mixing flaxseed oil in his food instead. i like to use natural things but i do not want to make him sick. please someone tell me straight forward what i should do.

Flaxseed oil would indeed help flaky skin and make the coat shiny (helps put oil back in the skin and coat). I don't know about raw only diet - I feed cooked human-grade food (brown rice and poultry is the staple, plus yoghurt 2-3X a week and veggies 3-4 times. Raw carrots, if your dog likes them, are great for tooth cleaning and also for the vitamin content. Peas I feed as well.) I can't really advise on raw only or not, but I would certainly balance his diet more with some veggies and yoghurt and maybe an egg (cooked) or two a week. How about you guys out there with APBTs?

Possibly get him tested for hypothyroidism. Some of the symptoms you described are similar to those found in dogs with hypothyroid. Just a simple blood test.
