male and male

tashy May 14, 2003 10:49 PM

Hi everyone. Has anyone here had sucess bringing a male rottie into a home with another male? The current male is a shelter sheperd/husky, just loves other dogs and is neutered. He just loves other dogs and while he likes to wrestle he is generally submissive with other dogs. He plays well with a male dob who lives down the street. I recently met a young male rottie who is in our local shelter. Picked up as a stray and the owner never claimed him. He is sweet as can be, loves having his huge brick of a head scratched hahha. Has a natural tail which wiggles constantly and has gorgeous dark tan markings. The staff says he is ok with other dogs but can be dominant and he is not neutered(yet) so he's not really be allowed to run around with the other dogs. I'm taking my dog in to meet him tommoro hopefully to see how they get on. I'd appreciate any input from people who'v made a male and male household work. I do realize that generally m and f combos work best but i've really fallen for this big lug hhaha thanks all.

tashy bless you for taking in the shelter dogs. Their fate is always questionable as the space becomes more crowded.

I think that you are already making a wise decision by taking your dog in to meet the Rottie. If they get along, I wouldn't even consider bringing him home until after the neuter. I do rescue for Dogue de Bordeaux but have Rotties. I have had more problems with the females I've brought in, but the problems have been from the DDBs not the Rotties. I personally haven't had any problems with my male rottie and other male dogs. but my boy Jake is an exceptionally docile boy. Was neutered early and came into our pack as a puppy and never challenged our alpha bitch for position.

Before you commit to a Rottie make sure you have read all you can about it and make an educated decision.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

How old is the Rottie? How old is your male? The problem is, no matter how thing SEEM, in a month or so there CAN be problems. It boils down to whether you are willing to keep them separated for life if the need arises, or if you can rehome him.

Don't hesitate to email me or post if you need help.

well debra they are both youngsters. My guy just turned one and the rott is 1.5(estimated since there is no history on him). And this is the tricky part, either them both being young could create a better bond between them since they are both pups OR the true temperments as far as dog agression may not have arised. I know things can change, but i know my boy and i just can not see a 360 in his attitude towards other dogs. He's been well socialized around other dogs, puppy kindergarten, obediance, and his days at the shelter where he regularly played with the other shelter dogs. Funny story..in my our obed. class there was a HUGE bouvier cross(probably with wolfhound) Anyways this dog had major issues with dog aggression, he was actually excluded from alot of the exercises cuz of this. My guy not realizing the danger strolled right up to him and gave him a big kiss! a couple of classes later that big dog grabbed a gsd by the neck and the gsd was screaming for his life. It's almost like my boy tells other dogs hey i mean u no harm, just wanna be friends hahah. But anyways I'm getting off topic now.
