i think since this crossing is most times a "whoops" kind of breeding, your best bet is to research the characteristics of both the Catahoulas and Bulldogs and then see which ones your dog displays. I have a "whoops" Dobie Shepherd, a lovely girl of 13, who actually combines the best of both breeds - except for one thing - she has hip displasia. Her right hip is especially weak and I try to make sure that neither of her front feet gets hurt, to keep the strain off that hind leg. But, temperamentally, she is very much a balance of both Dobie and Shepherd, a sight tracker and hunter extraordinaire (which is very much more a Dobie thing than a Shepherd thing). Because I know a fair amount about both breeds, I can sort out which traits are which breed (and some which are actually shared between the two).

Thank you for your reply, I have researched the Catahoula alot, and I am learning more about the American Bulldog as well. He is only 6 months old..but I would say he has characteristics of both, but more Catahoula. His coloring/markings are definately Catahoula. He definately does not have the longer Catahoula ears, they are set higher on his head as well. His head is a bit wider and his muzzle is bigger around, over all he has a "boxier", heavier, more stocky build than a Catahoula. The Catahoula Bulldog is listed as a rare breed and there are some links below, the few I have found. I also found a message board where people are begging for the names of breeders for the Catahoula Bulldog. I have pictures of my pups mom and litter mates, mom is definately a PB Catahoula but on the small side, most of the pups basically look like mine, although my pup seems to have the strongest expression of characteristics. There are two of the pups that really look Catahoula, with the longer ears etc. Anyhow, I have been looking...and looking, not found anyone who actually has one yet.

This is in Reply to the previous messages posted above...Catahoula Bulldog is a rare and quite new and developing breed but there are breeders who spend tremendous amount of work to develop a new breed which is unique and has its own identity that has good temperament, healthy, intelligent (Workable) and beautiful. As to what PTASHA said that the catahoula is a whoopi breed well all breeds are whoopi because all breeds registered or not are mixed with different breeds and some are mixed with 2 or more breeds to create a new breed and it takes 10 generations to register it a new breed ( ex. Dobermann was created by mixing Rottweilers for its ferocity, Beauceron for its intelligence, German Pointer for its scenting power, Manchester Terrier, Greyhound, Mini Pincher and the rest only Louis Dobermann knows what he mixed to create that breed thats why Dobbies are so unstable ) catahoula bulldog is now a certified unique and different breed which has its own identity and characteristics and the good thing only 2 breed was used to create it but some bad breeders are mixing pit bull so better buy on reputable breeders. If you are interested Maise check this web site for more info - www.nrta.com/nnrba.catbull.com and - www.catahoulabulldog.com
Umm, i don't think it's fair to call Dobies "unstable" because of their background. That's simply hooey. To call certain dobies "unstable" because they are poorly bred is more realistic. But then again, any dog bred without regards to the "total dog" will probably should signs of instability.
And no, not all dogs are "mixes". Greyhounds, Pharaoh hounds, Afghan Hounds, Basenjis, and many other sighthound, or "pariah" breeds were developed around Pharaoh times and have remained pure for thousands of years. Even many of the AKC breeds have bred true for hundreds of years.
If Catahoula bulldog breeders are working towards a standard and a recognized breed, then great! More power to them. But not all mixed breed breeders do so. Mainly because it's genetically difficult to get a consistant result when you get into f3-f4 breedings. It's easier to get a fairly consistant result when breeding for f1 crosses. Which is why many "hybrid" breeders stick to f1 crosses.

I'm in total agreement with you there! I've known lots of Dobes with the best temperaments in the world, even some poorly bred ones with great temperaments.

Hi Maisey,
Just a note to let you know that we would be happy to answer any questions you have regarding the catahoula bulldog if we can. We've been researching this breed for many years and got our first (Dreu) last summer. We are not breeders, just lovers of the breed. After we got Dreu, we received so many questions from people everywhere we went that we started the website (catahoulabulldog.com). Unfortunately, we've been slow on getting it up and running and I will say that for now the content is lacking--sorry. We have talked to breeders of both the american bulldog and catahoulas across the country and have found probably every bit of info out there that exists on the cross. Please feel free to email us at catahoulabulldog@snet.net if we can help. (P.S. Just had to tell you that one of our other dogs is an American Staffordshire named Maisie!).
The folks at catahoulabulldog.com
I tried to e-mail you and it got sent back. I will try again. But it said no such address.
