Yorkie with a Liver Shunt

I have a yorkie with a liver shunt. She is 5 years old and the sweetest little girl. Does anyone have any experience with long term care of a liver shunt dog? All the info I find is about fixing the shunt, not about what to do for a dog that could'nt have the shunt fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
