Joplin runs his first trial

Lynn May 18, 2003 10:27 PM

At age 8, Joplin ran his first ASFA trial last weekend. This time last year he'd have been hard pressed to walk the course 3 times, let alone whoop on the FCh greyhound in the BOB runoff. He held his own the entire day with dogs 1/2 his age. Oddly enough, he IS much calmer when he's not runnin than the other dogs. His reaction to the lure if very muted until he is right on the line and ready to go. Then he's all business. His endurance and agility have come a long way. The Breed runoff was his best run of the day, and he stayed right on the lure at the turns- a major challenge for a former track dog. On his first run at a meet (he was test dog) he overran the lure by about 100 feet on each turn, stopped, turned around and started over. LOL. He's come a long way and I am a very proud momma.

Congratulations Lynn, that's fantastic! And at age 8, you must be so amazingly proud! Any photos?

None yet. A friend said she thinks she got some. I have nearly given up on photographing at lure trials. Mine come out as specks or blurs or nothing at all. I was promised a picture of him overtaking the Open dog at the end of the BOB runoff. The Open dog won breed- she kept better speed throughout. Joplin has this nasty little habit of breaking phenomenally, maintaining speed for 1/2 the course, settling back in the back stretch and then hauling butt for the last quarter. It's a habit he had at the track even, and is Heck to break. It does make for a very photogenic finish, though.

I'll keep an eye out for the photo - I have zero luck with coursing shots too, but a friend of mine has taken some spectacular ones!
