My big Yorkie

Yorkiemom May 31, 2003 01:52 PM

I have a 6 mo old wonderful, healthy, smart, and beauitful Yorkie guy, and he is so-ooo big. He weighs now at 12.5 lbs. and I hope he won't grow much more, he's not fat; just big. I am curious if there are many others out around Joe's size. Would love to hear. Yorkiemom

One category of Yorkies that often comes out oversized are those from pet shop bloodlines. In order to produce more puppies for sale, they may use larger females. And of course that size will be inherited.

Hi, and thanks for a response to my query r/e bigger Yorkies. I purchased Joe from a very reputable breeder, who has produced some very fine Yorkies, a few of which have been champions. I know Joe's pedigree, and he comes from a European line that produces larger Yorkies; as they feel that they show up better in the ring. These dogs have different coats, and their eyes are not brown, but blacker. I was just curious to know if there were others with bigger Yorkies. I love this forum. Again thanks for always responding. PS. I should have added that his little Mom is slightly over 5 lbs,but his Dad and Granddad were the large guys.

If you're not planning to show or to breed for the American show ring, it should make no difference at all. You may also avoid some of the special health concerns that can accompany tiny size in dogs. I don't show my dogs, and my two current therapy dogs both came from a show breeder who decided not to show them. The male is under height and the female is over height. For me, they're both perfect!

A couple of my rescues are BIG. I have a 15 pounder, and Bentley who I lost a year ago last 0ctober was about 22 pounds.

Thanks guys for letting me hear from you about the most wonderful breed of dog. My first Yorkie was a puppy mill dog, but he was so wonderful even with all the health issues he had. Since he was my first dog ever, I had to learn so many things the hard way. I wanted things to be different this time, and have tried to do it better for Joe's sake. Didn't mean to go on a tangient, it's hard not to brag on these guys. My new question is Joe is going to be neutered next Monday, I worry about that as I forgot what is was like with Joshua many years ago; my question is (and I will ask the vet) Joe's baby teeth are not coming out, and he has a truck load of new teeth coming in. Is it possible that the vet could remove them while he is under anesthesia? I don't want to seem like a dummy, and they may fall out, but I think it's bothering him alot as they don't seem to be loose, and his new teeth have no room to come through. Thanks again to all of your wonderful, helpful advice. Yorkiemom

Yes, they absolutely can be pulled when he's neutered- we do this fairly often. It's easy enough to piggyback dental procedures since they're not sterile procedures- the tech can clean up the neuter site while the vet gets un-gowned and gloved, and come back in to do the teeth.

Thanks Lynn for your confirming what I thought could be done while Joe had his surgery, the Vet. did indeed pull his canines. He did wonderfully post-op and never acted like he even had a procedure done. I worried for nothing. He is still teething big time and it seems he has some difficulty with two more baby teeth that won't come out. The permanent teeth are having trouble coming in. Is this common with this breed? I don't recall my other dog ever having this much trouble. Again thanks for the wonderful encouragement I get from you all. Yorkiemom
