Bald spots and Extreme Shedding

ball_boi Jun 15, 2003 09:47 PM

Hello everyone. I have a year old black labrador retriever and he is currently shedding severely. I can grab his coat and huge clumps of hair will come off. Plus, he has numerous bald spots on his tail and the rest of his body where he has evidently been itching at it with his teeth due to the scabs. Is this normal in a shed? Does anyone know what this could be judged by the symptoms? If anyone could help with some information it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

hey there!

my lab is turning 1 year old on thursday and he is in constant massive shed as of late too! i can grab big clumps too. i thought it was a bit strange but labs do shed a lot. i was kind of wondering if anyone had a trick they used to reduce shedding? a product? grooming process? i'm desperate.

as for your baby having "scabs, balding, and itchiness" i would consult my vet. it doesn't sound right, those are not typical "shedding" symptoms. ya know? good luck! and let me know how it turns out.

Sounds to me like a food allergy. Talk to your vet about switching diet... some dogs just cannot handle the high corn content in most dog foods, some are even severely allergic to the corn.

Take the dog to the vet. It could be fleas or some other skin irritation that got out of hand, but now the risk of infection is high and he needs veterinary care.

Hi there
My yellow lab's abt 8 months now & I have the same problem! I have a carpet of fur in my house. Have put her on medicated shampoo (upon vet's recommendation), some antibiotics & omega fish oil but dont see much diff.
Is there something that I can put her on to decrease the excessive shedding? Some supplements perhaps? HELP!!!
