Adopting older rotties>>>

GeckGirl Jul 08, 2003 07:55 PM

Hey everyone:
I'm researching the adoption of a Rottweiler. Some people have told me that because of their strong nature, they need to be purchased as a puppy to adapt to their new owners, and to prevent nervousness, as in Dobies.
I would think that any dog in a rescue group or pound would be glad to have a good home regardless of age, and that it would be owner error for the dog's behavior, in most cases. (if the dog doesn't suit, then it just does not suit!) Could someone verify this? Thanks.

I cannot officially agree/disagree with that statement. I don't have enough experience with older rescues. However, you're right, it has to do with owner error and previous owners.

I know people that have successfully adopted older Rotties and they have been wonderful.

You should go ahead and contact the rescue group and work with them on getting the right dog. They would know which ones would be good for you.

Adult Rotties are successfully placed just as are almost any other breed of dog on earth. A stable dog will adjust to new homes. I do suggest you go through a good solid rescue and if you need help finding one, please let me know.

I know someone who adopted a female rottie that was roaming around my school. It was obvious she had had LOTS of puppies and we figured someone was using her just to get pups to sell. She was sweet and docile and I'd have loved to have taken her home if I didn't already have 3 dogs. I'd have been killed if I had taken her home. But she was super sweet. So, I think it just depends on the dog and the rescue group.

Personally and honestly?
If you go with a GOOD, reputable rescue, then you often can end up with a 100% better dog than buying one out of the paper and certainly better than one from a BYB! Reputable Rescues do temperment tests, evaulations, etc and MATCH you and the dog together. That line about a dog MUST be a puppy to bond/behave better is alot of Hooey!
I have seen rescues who are more bonded to their owners, who have MORE therapy titles and working titles then some that have been "bought" (Again, remember to use a REPUTABLE, ethical rescue!!!!) there are some HORRENDOUS rottie rescues out there I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole! If you need the name(s) of reputable ones in your area, give a holler!
Warmly,
