Halfway there...

Lynn Jul 09, 2003 07:09 PM

Joplin got two more firsts on last weekend in Conyers, once again showing the young ones what it's all about. The old man is at 50 points and counting and we are 6 first places in open for six starts. We're getting less and less raised eyebrows when the old man with the white face walks to the start.

In other news, I met PH Borzoi's Wings at last weekend's trial. What a gorgeous dog!

The other thing I learned- don't underwrap with red vetwrap!!! There was some nasty gravel on the field and I was underwrapping Joplin's legs at certain points with narrower wrap- sort of to shore up some pads and whatnot. The only stuff I had was red which I then overwrapped with Joplin's normal black. We got to the line and I guess a little bit of the red was showing because we nearly got dismissed when the huntmaster became convinced that I was running my elderly dog with bleeding feet I had scissors in my pocket and cut the wrap down a tiny bit so that he could see, and all was okay.

If she's to be doing any running in the southeast, she'll probably run with Joplin. There are so seldom any veteran greyhounds, he's been doing nearly all of his running (and winning ) in open. Hopefully he'll still be competitive come winter and spring. BTW, tomorrow is his 8th birthday! Happy birthday, Baby Boy!

Well rats! I've decided to put all my eggs in one basket, so to speak, with him and do ASFA only at least through his FCh. If he still has any run left in him by then, we might consider AKC. I'm not counting on him being competitive for much longer than this winter and spring. *sniff* There's something sort of cool about watching the looks from others that range from amusement (why would she put that ancient dog in open???) to disagreement (You shouldn't run a dog that old) turn to "wow" when he goes on to beat the younguns. It won't be quite the same starting with a young dog.
