Dog Days of Summer- Rottie Style

rottweilerdriver Jul 18, 2003 05:16 PM

I don't know about you, but BOY is it HOT here in SC.!!!
What are you and your rotties doing? Clustered around A/C units and ceiling fans? Doing any training, clinics, trials in the evening?
For some folks who may not know. Rotties are NOT well heat tolerant. Remember they come from "cooler climates" so if you have an 'Outdoor Only' dog make SURE to have a wading pool, or sprinkler system in place and PLENTY of shade (ALL day shade, remember the sun can shift) Of course their fav place is in your home, plunked down in front of the AC
Max and I filmed a show recently called celebrating dogs, and I tell you what. The film crew was here ALL day long, and we were so exhausted by the end of teh day, even though I watched him diligently to make sure he was cool and refreshed the whole time.
PS: Ice cubes are GREAT fun treats for Rotties to "cool down" also here is a recipie for homemade "Pupsicles"
Version 1) Use 4 cups water, and 3 cubes of ANY flavored boullion cubes (Chicken, beef, ham) if your dog is on medications, or sodium is a worry, use LOW SODIUM boullion. Mix together, then pour into Ice cube trays, freeze and serve! Yum!
Version 2) Get UNFLAVORED gelatin. Follow directions on box, but with your water add 3-5 boullion cubes (any flavor) and make a "Dog Jello mold" <G> Feel free to add Bananas, apple slices (AVOID CITRUS FRUITS!!!!!) Dogs love those too!
Version 3) Doggy Frozen banana
Use a RIPE banana. Freeze for an hour or two (to harden) melt CAROB, NOT CHOCOLATE!!!! CHOCOLATE is TOXIC to dogs! or..."White Chocolate" which contains NO Theobromine (the toxin found in regular chocolate). Melt the carob (OR you can use YOGURT!!! ) Wrap in WAX PAPER, freeze overnight. A GREAT "Outside Treat" on a HOT steamy day!
Max LOVES the Frozen Banana (We use YOGURT as the coating) and he likes the Doggy Frozen Cubes too!
The Rat Terrier LIKES the Frozen Banana, but he runs around, licking it, carries it, licks it, carries it, licks some more, carries some more<G> I suppose for a small dog you could cut your banana in half OR 4ths.
ENJOY! and have a "cool" summer!
Warmly,

Brandy wouldn't go out this time of year if nature didn't force her. Hooch love it outside anytime of year but he also has a large wading pool. Sometimes mom even throws in some (feeder) fish for him to try to catch. But even in northern Michigan if I didn't have air I wouldn't survive.

Thanks for the recipies, they sound great and I'm sure the dogs will love them.

So has he ever caught one?? <G> A goldfish?
LOL! Talk about a "fishey exercise" LOL!

Max is thrilled ANYTIME, ANYONE is holding a Tennis Ball (or other throw toy)Stupid dog would run himself to death if you let him. We have a rule around here, no BALL playing if it's over 85 or high humidty (which is most days).

Thanks for the reminders and thanks for the recipes. I'm sure the Rott-N-Dogue Crew around here will love them.

Mostly they won't go out when it's been as hot as it's been here. Like you we have lots of heat and high humidity. However, every now and then I have to go out and lure Jake back in with an ice cube or some other treat. I think he just gets so bored laying around in the house and garage.

That must have been fun even though taxing. When/where would we be able to see it?
