lab vomits alot

granny Jul 18, 2003 07:56 PM

My lab is one year old and weighs 90 lbs. He eats twice a day. 3 cups of puppy chow(large breed formula). He vomits very often. Sometimes it's food. Sometimes it's bile. It's about every day. He does not get table scraps. Have experimented with different treats to see if that was the cause and can find no connection. Sometimes he will eat and six hrs. later will throw the food up. Very frustrating and beginning to worry. Planning to take him to the vet but wondered if this sounds typical at all. He has always had this problem. I know, I know, I should have gone earlier but I thought he just had a weak puppy stomach. What do you think?

He needs to be checked out by your veterinarian. He could have some sort of problem, serious, or not so serious. A lot of things could manifest this way. Meanwhile you might try feeding 3 times a day instead of twice, having the dog go not more than 8 hours without eating. That worked for one dog of mine. She just produced too much stomach acid and needed to eat that often.

Took Tuff to the vet. She took a stool sample and checked for any abdominal pain. She says he looks very healthy. She sold me some expensive dog food. He is to finish the bag and see how he does. If he improves she will then tell us what kind of cheaper dog food we can buy and work from there to identify what he is intolerant to. If he doesn't improve she will know which dog foods to try to eliminate the problem. Shouldn't have waited so long to find out what was bothering him. He hasn't thrown up since starting the new food. We'll see!

Why would you feed a 90 pound one year old lab puppy chow!? If you have ever been to a vet you would have been told you that you get your lab off of puppy food (large breed or NOT) at latest 8 months or they will grow WAY TOO FAST. This will lead to hip and joint problems. Your lab shopuld be eating a high quality dog food, and by high quality I do not mean Science Diet or Eukanuba. Look up Eagle Pack dog food. Lastly, buy a book on dog health, and read it.

I have a black lab as well, 6 months. When I brought him home he was on Purina Puppy Chow for large breed and he threw up and had the runs all the time. All I did was change to a new brand of dog food and problem solved. I feed him Nutro Max for large breed puppy's. It isn't that expensive and he loves it and has had no problems since. It isn't the top of the line Nutro dog food it is the second in line so much more affordable. I just bought a 40lb bag for $24.99 at Petsmart. I've heard really bad things about the puppy chow.
