Spleen & Liver tumors

RobynA Jul 23, 2003 01:31 PM

My beautiful 3 yr old golden, Oakley, had his spleen removed today. The vet says there were also tumors in his liver - he is pretty sure that he has lymaphic cancer - we'll know for sure when we have the biopsy results tomorrow. Its all happened so fast, last week he was fine - took him to the vet because he didn't want to eat and was listless. Is ther anyone who has a happy ending to this situation

I hope things will turn out well for your dog. As you say, you'll know more when the pathology report comes back. I had an older dog with a similar situation, and the laboratory results came back very good. I wish the same for you and your dog. God bless.

Robyn check out this site when you have time, I found all kinds of up lifting info when Barney was fighting his cancer with chemo. There are lots of different links for different problems but what ever the diagnoses is become educated. Start reading all you can on the subject. Goldens do have a weaken immune system so do talk to your vet about supplements to help keep your furbaby strong. Maybe even work with a holistic vet. That way you get the best of both worlds, holistic compliments traditional treatments for a better quality of life.

Dear Sandypaws - thanks for your reply. Sadly Oakley's system was too weak to fight the cancer. The biospy came back yesterday with very bad news - which I knew before I got it. His liver was riddled with malignant cancer so the he could not have chemo. I treated him with homeopathic cancer treatments but his wound from the op was not healing (looked worse everyday) He weakened so very quickly that we made the very hard decision to put him out of his pain. I read up so much on goldens before I got him and went to endless trouble to make sure his parents had no hip or eye problems. Only with now have I found out about their immune systems. I have a labrador who turns 3 on Monday. I'm changing his diet to organic - we can't go through this again. They are our children.

Robyn,

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. It happened so fast! I know how you feel about these dogs being our children. Many people do not understand, but my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Cancer in Goldens has been on the rise, shockingly in dogs much younger than the 10 years of age when cancer becomes common in all breeds. This is a terrible loss, and my heart goes out to you.

Robyn, I am so sorry to read this news, but know that my heart aches for you. Having Oakley for only a few years God must have had a better plan for your boy. The choice you made was a gift of love, the hardest thing to do but you know it was the best for him. I have walked in your shoes not to long ago and my boy lasted for a year on chemo. We had a gift having them for their short time on this earth and now they are playing together at the 'Bridge' This time around I did more extensive homework looking for a breeder. Eyes, hips heart, elbows and cancer. Although cancer we don't have any guarantees but I made sure that there dogs live a ripe old age. Your boy was only 3 and my boy was 3˝ when diagnosed so it is possible they could have gotten the weak genes out of their gene pool.
Know that I am lighting a candle for your Oakley and may you have wonderful memories of your boy for then he will continue to live in your heart.

Thank you for all your kind words and prayers. It makes what my husband and I are going through easier. So many friends have also called to say what a wonderful boy Oakley was. Goldens certainly are very special. Every evening he used to carry in something from the car when I got home. when friends came to visit he would bring all his toys to show off.
Rupert, our labrador, behaved completely out of character when I walked him on the beach this morning. he was aggressive towards most other dogs. Something that he has never done before. Yesterday when the vet came around we put him in another room but he went frantic. once Oakley was asleep he kept on pulling the sheet off Oakley. It was as if he could not accept that his brother was no longer with us. (We got rupert when he was 11 months and the 2 have been inseperable ever since.) Hope its just a phase.

We had taken Sailor with us when Barney crossed over to the Bridge. Sailor was still young9 months old but he went through a depression. He missed Barney and even though I took him to the beach and played with him alot he needed another 4 legged furbaby with him, so we got his ˝ sister Paris just 2 months ago and it was the best thing we ever did for Sailor.
Rupert must miss Oakley very much and they do change behaviors. Prayers and hugs coming your way. Enjoy the beach, that is where I go to get some peace and remember my Barney Boy. He so loved to fish and go shelling with me. They are all so very special.
