C-Section on pugs

mudshovel Jul 29, 2003 07:06 PM

Good Day to all! last sunday i was able to talk to a pug breeder (or i should say a puppy miller). his pugs are kinda big. i think the male weighs 18-20 lbs and is obviously out of standard. he proudly said that his bitch is proven to deliver pus normal. im not impress with his dogs anyway because of the size so i have no plan to get a pup from him. but one thing he says caught my attention. he said that if a bitch gave birth in a C-Section, the bitch can only give pups up to her 3-4 years of age. he said that it is not healthy for a dog. is this true? i don't have a plan to breed pugs since what im planning to get is a male and im planning to show him. i just got curious on what the man said to me coz i haven't heard of that before. thanks in advance and god bless to you all..

Well, the standard for pugs, acording to the AKC is up to 18 pounds. So, 18-20 isn't TOO bad. But, if you weren't comfortable with this breeder's setup, go somewhere else. As for the c-section thing, the reproductive life of the bitch and whether or not subsequent litters must be delivered by c-section are dependent on several things- the reason of the first c-section, breed (pugs and other short nosed breeds are sectioned more often), and heredity (what was reproductive life of mom and/or sisters?).

ooops! im sorry. yes ur right, 14-18 lbs is the standard and 10-11 is the ideal height. but those that i've seen in that kennel is approximately 22-24 lbs. they aren't that cute and they look very heavy. thanks for the reply!

Pugs are supposed to be very heavy and very fat. Don't judge a dog unless you are very experinced as far as looking at it and trying to guess the weight. Go to the shows( and there is a show every weekend) and compare them to what the breeder has offered. You sound mad at the breeder. Did he refuse to go down on the price or something? Remember that a c-section is rather expensive ($250-$1,200 depending on where you are)Most puppy mills will not bother with dogs that require c-sections as it cuts into the profit that they are trying to obtain.
At age 5, a dog is the equivilant of a 38 year old human. It does get a little dangerous for a female to be bred beyond 5 years of age unless you know the dog and she has been thoroughly checked by a vet. He doesn't sound like a mill if he quits with a bitch after age 4. A mill will breed them until they are dead or stop producing pups.

Does this person show? If not, run away if you want a show dog.

Otherwise, the comment she can't 'give pups' beyond 3-4 yrs of age is hogwash. Depending on the bitch, they can have another litter, naturally, at 6-9. I know someone who just whelped a litter out of a 10 yr old bitch, who doesn't act anything like her age, was still out coursing last year. She had NO problems. Each bitch is different.

thanks for your reply. now i know that c-section can lessen the
years the dog can give litter. :D
