Check the coat in the "mane" area, and also the collar. When I adopted my male Belgian Tervuren, he had a massive coat, and I'd been warned his grooming was out of control, so I had a friend pick him up and I first met him at the shop of a groomer who is the best ever. I knew I could trust her with my dog. She took care of the hair, but when I was working with his collar to put tags on, etc., I realized it smelled like, well, you don't want to know what it smelled like. I tried to get rid of the smell, and nothing worked. It was a nylon collar, and I can't imagine why it couldn't be cleaned, but it couldn't. So of course I threw it out.
